Adored Irish Mother and Grandmother, Rebecca (Ruby) Hanna’s love of life won’t end with her death. Ruby passed away on March 24, 2021 at the age of 95, after spending her final days with loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives in gratitude and service.
Ruby was born Rebecca McAfee in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 30th, 1925. She grew up in a very musical family, was lead soloist in the church choir, and was often told she had “the voice of an angel” as a child. After marrying in 1956, she set out to build a new life in America with her husband and their toddler son, and landed in Tacoma, Washington in 1962 where she resided for over forty years.
As a devoted Catholic, service and worship brought great joy to Ruby. She dedicated her time to the Holy Cross Church, in Tacoma, as a member of the Parish Council, the Mother’s Club, and assisted their fundraising by donating precious works of ceramic she had perfected over her years of taking ceramic classes.
Annual Holidays in Ireland with her family and simple indulgences delighted Ruby. She loved hitting the slots, knitting blankets and sweaters for her family, and shopping with purpose. Ruby never wore pants a day in her life, never missed her weekly appointment at the hairdressers, and was never seen without the perfect handbag and matching high heels. She was an impressive Irish Dancer and delighted in proving it to everyone. Humor kept her young at heart and she enjoyed getting into mischief. Her contagious laugh and her love of storytelling delighted all who knew her and had the pleasure of sitting by her side over a cup of Irish Breakfast tea and one of her famous mouthwatering cream puffs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her brothers Hugh McAfee, Patrick McAfee; her sisters, Mary McAfee, Patricia (Bridie) Tillery, Kathleen McAfee, and is survived by her only child, Noel (Lorelei) Hanna; six grandchildren; Jason (Jessica) Hanna, Stephanie (Jason) Wilson, Nolan (Tami) Hanna, Shawn (Brittany) Hanna, Shana Kemp, Karina Cupp and her great grandchildren; Lelu, Braden, Sydney, Sadie, Hunter, Selena, Indy, Zoey; and her sister, Sarah (Sadie) and nieces; Geraldine, Pauline; and her nephew's Brendan, Patrick and Billy. Funeral Mass will be held in Tacoma at Holy Cross Catholic Church on April 8th, 2021 at 11am. Ruby will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.
