John Fillmore Comfort

John Fillmore Comfort, born April 20, 1927 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma, Washington, died June 2, 2026 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, completing a full life of 99 years. A lifetime area resident, he attended St. Patrick’s grade school, Bellarmine Preparatory high school, Gonzaga University and St. Louis University Medical School. John served in both the United States Navy and US Army.

John was a loving husband, father, Papa, and Big Papa. His wife Maggie and his very large family are what he cherished the most. He was an avid golfer, gardener and he loved and enjoyed his beach home on Henderson Bay. With Maggie, he loved to travel and they spent their winters in Palm Desert, CA. A parishioner at St. Charles Borromeo, his Catholic faith was of utmost importance to him. John was an avid golfer and a member of the Fircrest Golf Club and Woodhaven Country Club for many years. He seldom turned down an invitation for a round of golf.

John practiced medicine as a family doctor, providing care for the South Tacoma community with his friend and partner Bill Sullivan for close to 40 years. Dr. Comfort served as chief of staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and was a member of Pierce County Medical Society.

John is preceded in death by his wife Maggie Comfort, the love of his life. They met while decorating for a Bellarmine high school dance and were happily married for 64 years. He is survived by his 8 children, Thom (Khanh), Chris (Dave), Connie Geroy (Dale), Jack (Sue), Peter (Pam) Carol (Wally) Amy, Dave (Julie) and daughter-in-law Kathy Comfort. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Art, Bob, Pat, his sister Jean and 3 infant children.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, June 10, 2026, 11am at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Inurnment at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s honor to the Gertrude C.Comfort Endowment, at Bellarmine Prep high school.
