May 26, 1952 — March 31, 2025

Tacoma

David was the eldest of five children born and raised in Madison, WI, by Dr. James Moore and Jean Liggett Heller Moore.

Early in his sobriety, David found his purpose in supporting young people struggling with addiction. To further this work, he founded Olympic Counseling Services in 1984. The practice ultimately served the Pierce, King, Mason and Thurston Counties as well as over 15 school districts throughout the state of Washington. David earned his doctorate in psychology from the University of Washington in 1991 and continued to practice until the end of his life. He was a pioneer in youth substance abuse treatment and helping families successfully navigate addiction. In 1993, David was instrumental in the opening of the youth treatment wing of Sundown M. Ranch, a renowned addiction and recovery facility in Yakima.

Dr. Moore continued to expand his reach. In partnership with White Bison and the Wellbriety movement, David brought his work to Juneau, Alaska. He became particularly connected to the Native Alaskan communities, including the Tlingit and Haida Tribes. In this work he was able to contribute to the sobriety and healing of countless families. One of his proudest achievements was authoring substantial grants that are still serving these various school and community organizations to this day. Back in Washington, David continued to author grants that provided critical funding for drug and alcohol prevention work in public schools.

In 2001, Dr. Moore founded his private practice, where he helped families and adolescents struggling with addiction. David was committed to continuing education and cultivating new voices in psychology, which led him to a fulfilling career as a professor. He taught at Argosy University and acted as an associate professor at both Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington. Through this work, David created lasting relationships with many of his graduate students.

David dedicated his personal life to his community within Alcoholics Anonymous, where he mentored and sponsored many individuals. With over 30 years of sobriety, his perspective was unique and always appreciated amongst his various home groups throughout the years. He is survived by two daughters who share his passion for education and bettering the world around them. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to either Sundown M. Ranch or White Bison.
