Sister Mary Jean Meyer, OP

Sister Mary Jean Meyer (Agnes), a Dominican Sister of Tacoma, died peacefully on August 10 at St. Joseph Residence in Seattle. A native of Bellingham, she was born January 10, 1927 to Edmund and Anna (Grismer) Meyer.

She attended Assumption School, Bellingham, and Bellingham High School.  After graduation in June 1945, she entered the Dominican Sisters at Marymount, Tacoma.  She received the habit in 1946 and received the name Sister Mary Jean. She made profession January 8, 1959.

She attended Central Washington University and received her BA.  She then received her M.Ed. Administration from Seattle University.

Sister Mary Jean has had a variety of ministries during her years of ministry including 27 years of elementary and secondary teaching which included 5 years as principal.  She was also active in retreat work and communications in both California and Washington. She was also a talented musician.

Her first place of retirement was to the family home in Bellingham.  She loved being back in Bellingham, and in addition to her love of music, she loved gardening.

She moved to St. Joseph Residence in 2010.

Sister Mary Jean was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Sister Mary Geraldine, OP, and Lavina (Meyer) Gillfillan and brother Joseph Meyer. She is survived by brothers Fritz and John, and sister Mary Ann (Meyer) Townsend.

Services for Sister Mary Jean will be held at St. Joseph Residence, 3700 37th SW, Seattle, on Tuesday, August 27, with a sharing of memories at 10:15 AM followed at 11:00 AM by the Mass of Christian Burial.  Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Tacoma, on August 27 at 3:00 PM.
